Tinnitus frequency generator

A tone generator built for tinnitus: a continuous tone from 20 Hz to 16,000 Hz with coarse, fine and 1 Hz steps, a choice of pure tone, soft tone or narrow noise band, left/right balance, and a volume that starts low.

What a frequency generator is for

Many people with tonal tinnitus want to know roughly what pitch they hear. A frequency generator lets you sweep a tone up and down until it sounds similar. That rough pitch is useful in two ways: it helps choose masking sounds with energy in the same region, and it lets you try the frequency-centred experiments in Find My Quiet Sound. It is not a hearing test and it does not change the tinnitus itself.

How to use it safely

  1. Tones feel louder than noise at the same setting, so Find My Quiet Sound caps the tone level lower than other sounds and fades it in. Keep it at the lowest comfortable level.
  2. Sweep slowly with the slider, then refine with +/−10 Hz and +/−1 Hz.
  3. Check one octave up and down. Pitch matching often lands an octave off; compare the tone with double and half its frequency before you settle.
  4. Stop if anything feels uncomfortable. A few minutes is plenty.

Typical ranges

Most people place their tinnitus between about 3,000 and 8,000 Hz, but lower and higher pitches are common. If yours sounds more like a hiss than a ring, the narrow-band and hiss-band tone types will feel closer than a pure tone.

Frequency Bloom visualiser

The generator links to a live visualiser whose pattern changes with the frequency and level you set — a calm way to see what you are hearing. It is decorative, not diagnostic.
